Thoughts on the Tennessee GOP’s outrageous behaviour

Guns don’t kill people. People kill people.

So the argument goes and they have a point. However this logic could be extended to say that lawmakers don’t commit gun violence, gun holders commit gun violence and this can be extended further to society, culture and history. A similar argument could be used when it comes to cars, especially because cars are specifically designed not to kill people. Unfortunately the argument only stands up on a micro level and you only have to generalise it very slightly before it breaks down considerably.

Its not about the guns

While the shooting in a Tennessee school brings focus on the issue of gun violence (though its never truly out of focus) there’s a far wider issue that encompasses children fatally shooting their siblings, those with suicidal thoughts having a very accessible and effective way to end their lives and cops having to carry guns (the police in the UK are very rarely armed because those they police very rarely possess a gun).

Despite the undeniable link between lethal firearms and school shootings we still need to look further afield than the weapon itself. The two particular and cogent issues are the gun manufacturers and the availability of these weapons rather than the…
