You would hardly hold Australia up as a model country of progress when you consider its immigration policies, treatment of indigenous people and actions on climate change. Yet groundbreaking activity is going on in Australia in terms of cleaner energy and sustainability. The same can be said for other countries worldwide. However with national policy being very much tied up with satisfying the carbon kings, even countries signed up to greener policies have one hand tied behind their backs because of the aggressive lobbying of these dirty but wealthy industries.

Regardless of whether politicians have admirable intentions, government machines are incredibly hostile to initiatives that challenge power and profits. The low esteem with which politicians are held has not so much to do with them being terrible people (though politics does attract sociopaths), but more to do with them not measuring up to the office they have willingly signed up to. As well as catering to control freaks, politics is naturally inclined to corrupt it’s practitioners.

It was one of Tony Benn’s convictions that democracy was dependent on MPs being eminently disposable. As others have said, we should not fear politicians or governments, they should fear us. While it would be unhelpful to be able to…
