Cut the Tories Loose
Let’s face it, the EU Referendum was a bag of spanners before it was even unleashed on the public. It was promised by a party for whom democracy is an inconvenient mechanism that only works for them when its compromised. It was clearly intended to end the long running problem the party had with Eurosceptics. And the objective was to shut them up. The government (effectively the voice of the Conservative parliamentary party) advised the country to vote to remain but failed to impress upon us that the vote was advisory. What’s more important is that it was a simple in/out choice which we now know was a fatal flaw which has managed to clog up Westminster to the extent that it is now utterly dysfunctional.
Democracy relies upon those who engage in it having at least some understanding of the decisions they have to make and hopefully a vague idea of how its going to affect them. To be effective it needs the electorate to be polictically informed at a rudimentary level. This is not an easy task, a truth those who seek power at any cost are well aware of. The Labour vote is hard won (we pray for good weather on election day to get them out) because its essentially a party of change and the English, especially, tend to be averse to rocking the boat. I suspect the Tories were relying on the conservative nature of the electorate to keep things as they were and vote Remain; except for many, the ‘were’ was some pre-EU…
