I can hear the supervisor addressing her team with the words “This is no time for heroics” because that is not what true heroes ordinarily do. Counterintuitively, self preservation is the mantra that carers, nurses and firefighters have drilled into them. A fit, healthy and living key worker is much more useful than one who is compromised by injury or circumstance. The firefighter who defies orders and pulls off a miracle is rightly honoured for their bravery but if that were encouraged it would inevitably lead to more casualties and could potentially compromise operations.
