I remember when it was non-negotiable to call for peace. Yet looking back that was an excuse for war. We talked of a war to end all wars but that was like a feast to end all feasts. The West knows that all wars must end in peace but it’s addicted to war.
We are in a time of transparency. Gaza is a theatre, performing the reality that all our memorials hide. Instead of 1 minute of silence, we should stand through an hour of screams, gun fire and wailing.
The gathering should then disperse with the message “you’ve learned nothing” ringing in their ears. Maybe then it will occur to us that peace is not only much easier than war but that the latter is not a prerequisite.
