I think I see where you're coming from. I follow a YouTuber called Alice Cappelle who has just critiqued Western activism and cites Matty Healy who was performing in a conservative Muslim country. He kissed another male on stage supposedly supporting the LGBTQ+ community there but achieved quite the opposite and only annoyed those he saw as allies. He exposed his unconscious neo-colonial mindset.

I see this also in the West's attitude to countries like Russia, Iran and Syria. The truth for China is that its far more democratic than the USA regardless of how it is catagorized.
