In some ways racism in America is hard baked. The UK has never had the equivalent of the Jim Crow laws and having a dark skinned Prime Minister wasn't seen as significant. We've also never had the equivalent of the KKK.

Racism in the UK has more to do with class and our historic empire. It's more subtle than in the US because it's threaded into our national sense of superiority which goes back to long before the USA existed.
