It seems to me that the main weakness in AI is similar to why fixing ourselves is so difficult. We've mapped the human genome & made incredible advances in medicine over the last 150 years yet the primary tools we have are patient feedback and symptons. We can't work from first principles because we have no designer or manufacturer to refer to.
The number of possible combinations in a shuffled pack of cards is unimaginably huge (52!) and nature has billions of years head start on us. I know that cognitive function in my brain is dwarfed by the power of my subconcious and that reverse engineering my subconscious would be like desalinating the sea.
