Marxism is essentially a theory based on the ownership of the means of production and control over the surplus product generated by their operation.
No nation state has successfully adopted the marxist principle because of the nature of power, as you've made reference to. But that doesn't stop a country seeing this principle as a benchmark and working towards them.
In a similar manner but in contrast to communist and socialist leaning countries you have Israel which is based on Zionism which is an ethno-nationlist ideal. Israel has failed in this endeavour because it depends on the occupation of non-Jews.
Because of the impossibility of this dream, it has, just like the USSR, resorted to authoritarian and brutality and, just like with the USSR, the chickens are coming home to roost.
