Observations from the Manchester anti-Tory protest
25 of us set off on a coach journey from Lancaster to Manchester to protest the Tory Party conference held in that city. The march and rally was organised by The People’s Assembly though our group was marching under the Stand Up To Racism banner.
The day started out rather grey which didn’t reflect the colourful marchers, both in terms of their banners and costumes and, at times, the language. The now familiar “F*#^ the Tories” was favourite, with the Young Communists bellowing out the unoriginal and non PC “Build a bonfire, build a bonfire, put the Tories at the top. Put the fascists in the middle and we’ll burn the F*#^in lot”.
I have to admit I was largely focused on the prevalent issue of war (Ukraine being a thorn in the side of peace) and was glad that Stop The War had a contingent. The banner I had started the night before and finished on the bus had the same message as the title of this article so I was pleased when several people picked up…
