Day 17 (2)

“News” and “The News” are two quite different things, news simply being what’s new while prefixing it with ‘the’ makes it entirely different. The news is an odd beast in that for it to be news worthy it must be dramatic and generally not in a good way. It doesn’t really matter how good or bad it is, just that it must elicit more than a passing nod. In a sense the rising death toll from CoVID-19 is becoming predictable and therefore less dramatic to the point where the Prime Minister’s health is the leading story even though we have very little to go on in terms of the detail.

The thing is, we were expecting the death toll to rise so its more about the numbers than that another mother, father, son or daughter has succumbed to the deadly virus. Another factor is the disconnect between what the government spokespeople are saying and the facts on the ground. That means, instead of being able to process the lack of protective equipment and the fallout which not only means doctors and nurses getting sick but that the viral load they are prey to makes the situation far more serious.

Sadly we will learn little from this experience unless this news soup is jettisoned in favour of an honest appraisal
