One thing I would add is that you need to know your own schema. So often people want to persuade others of their wrong thinking yet have no coherent schema of their own.

A useful exercise would be to explain your schema to a critical friend because only when you have to explain your thinking can you truly know what you’re thinking.

The truth is that most people have an exaggerated sense of their own understanding. Only when you humbly accept the huge gaps in your own understanding can you persuade someone to accept theirs.
