Ordinary Evil

And the selling of our soul

We’ve seen unimaginable evil
Extraordinary evil
On our screens and on our phones
Compounded evil burns into our retinas
And leaves us grasping for anything to help this make sense

Words we spoke with trepidation
Now blood and bones, beyond words
In the farthest reaches of the known universe
What we thought we knew
Has lost all meaning

So what of ordinary evil?

Ordinary evil has no guns
It has no tanks or ammunition
It seeks no innocents to kill or maim
It pulls no triggers and leads no troops
But it’s evil none the less

Ordinary evil stands in panelled rooms
And smiles before cameras
Speaking words without meaning
The circle which engaged da Vinci his entire life
Is squared in minutes

They get it
and
apparently
we don’t
