Outside of the Gospels the first 3 chapters of Genesis are my favourite. Contrary to the moralisers there is no moral narrative here, its simply an explanation of how things are and its hard to argue against it.

We do have dominion over the animals, man does break his back in toil and women are ruled over by men. That might not be ideal but it is what it is.

Its a story of transition from innocence to culpability and interestingly, though God's worse are harsh they are not condemnatory. In fact clothing them is an act of forgiveness. I've only just seen the connection with God's treatment of Eve and Jesus' interaction with the woman caught in adultery.

In both instances its the male that gets the rough end of the stick.
