The sharp incline towards authoritarianism and out-of-control state violence is indeed an indicator that the old order is coming to an end. We cannot control this escalation of violence and oppression. Maybe we don't want to because we cannot put off the inevitable. The question is: what can we do to mitigate the suffering of the common people? They will bring us down with them.
