Fresh faced and laced with honeydew
She met him with a smile
With no intent or interest
She held it for a while
He put her at her ease
And so the conversation flowed
Each shared a point of view
That no no one earned and no one owed
She had no thought of sharpening
His disparate shards of youth
He had no thought of blowing off the dust
To tell the truth
He’d know his heart had not maintained
Its steady 69
His self concern would wait its turn
Stay patiently in line
He’d read her face but couldn’t know
What thought lay underneath
Her every word translated
Through the whiteness of her teeth
His sole intent was to enjoy
Each comment and review
While he could add his insight
To the gaps where they were due
And then she was distracted
By a friend she recognised
He bade her take her leave
His disappointment well disguised
