This feeds into the bootstrap myth, that the ideal is for government to cease being a parent and allow you to manage your own life. In fact we don't have the tools or leverage, as individuals, that we need to govern our lives.
What we really need is a devolved and accountable government structure, much more political education (our ignorance is power in their hands) and local assemblies in which communities can self determine.
Most people don't care to 'manage' their lives, they simply want agency and for their choices to be real ones. Technically we could all choose to own private jets but the reality is often a choice between eating and heating.
