Unfortunately you have a very distorted and rosy picture of Western respect for human values. Britain looted and ruined India and its attrocities internationally were so great we made huge bonfires of documents to hide the barbarity of our empire. King Leopold killed over 10 million people in the Congo and mutilated others. Let's not forget the slave trade and the millions of indeginous people we have eviscerated over the last 500 years.

I think we have to say that the West hasn't let itself down we've just been exposed.
