If you’re remotely into wood or metal work you’ll have heard of wet and dry sandpaper, so called because it can be used equally wet or dry depending on what its being used for. Sandpaper is a misnomer because the abrasive is actually fused bauxite (aluminium oxide) which is also used in grinding wheels. Incidently the word ‘whet’ means to sharpen (one use for a grinding wheel)…
